California Homes Swallowed by Sinkhole in Dormant Volcano - May 15, 2013

Published on May 15, 2013
About 100 miles north of San Francisco in a neighborhood called Lakeport, cracks in the ground that have turned into cavernous divides are splitting homes, causing them to break and sink beneath the ground.

The community was built upon now-dormant volcano Mount Konocti; officials can't say whether or not the volcano is a contributing factor in the strange splitting occurrence.

"We have a dormant volcano, and I'm certain a lot of things that happen here (in Lake County) are as a result of that, but we don't know about that," county public works director Scott De Leon told Yahoo News.

Residents Scott and Robin Spivey noticed cracks in the walls of their Tudor-style home that widened by the day.

"We want to know what is going on here," Spivey said.

Spivey, former city building inspector, and his wife were among the eight households that have now been evacuated in the Clear Lake area of Lake County. 10 more are on imminent evacuation notice.

"It's a slow-motion disaster," Randall Fitzgerald, Lakeside Heights resident, said.

These kinds of collapses that happen in volcanic areas with steep hills can move numerous feet one day, and a quarter of an inch the next.

Some, including Consultant Tom Ruppenthal of Utility Services Associates in Seattle say that groundwater is partly to blame. Water has surfaced in the area-there has suddenly been a wellspring of water at the top of hills, where not much groundwater runs-that erodes some of the land until it splits.

"It's very common for groundwater to shift its course," he said. "I think the groundwater has shifted."

Until homeowners can settle finances with insurance companies-some of whom have left residents high and dry, as these kinds of home emergencies are not often covered-they will have to make due.

"It's a tragedy, really," contractor Dean Pick said while taking pictures in Lakeport for an insurance company. "I've never seen anything like it."

Pentagon to Court Martial Those Who Share Christian Faith

Published on May 14, 2013
Pentagon to Court Martial Those Who Share Christian Faith .The Pentagon has released a statement confirming that soldiers could be prosecuted for promoting their faith: "Religious proselytization is not permitted within the Department of Defense...Court martials and non-judicial punishments are decided on a case-by-case basis...".

The statement, released to Fox News, follows a Breitbart News report on Obama administration Pentagon appointees meeting with anti-Christian extremist Mikey Weinstein to develop court-martial procedures to punish Christians in the military who express or share their faith.

(From our earlier report: Weinstein is the head of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and says Christians--including chaplains--sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ in the military are guilty of "treason," and of committing an act of "spiritual rape" as serious a crime as "sexual assault." He also asserted that Christians sharing their faith in the military are "enemies of the Constitution.")

Being convicted in a court martial means that a soldier has committed a crime under federal military law. Punishment for a court martial can include imprisonment and being dishonorably discharged from the military.

Bee Deaths

Published on May 15, 2013
In the wake of a massive US Department of Agriculture report highlighting the continuing large-scale death of honeybees, environmental groups are left wondering why the Environmental Protection Agency has decided to approve a "highly toxic" new pesticide.

The continuing mass death of honeybees, known scientifically as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and a "pollinator crisis," could well strain production of over 100 crops in the US including apples, zucchinis, avocados and plums. The agriculture value of these products is estimated at over $200 billion globally per year.

As RT recently reported, a new USDA report has taken a broad look at the decline of bee colonies in the country, highlighting a dire situation as the number of colonies has plummeted from 3 million in 1990 to 2.5 million this year. Demonstrating that the decline is a long-term issue, that same report points to the existence of 6 million honey bee colonies in 1947.

Though dire, the report does not offer any immediate solutions, as scientists continue to examine the potential causes for the mass colony collapses, during which adult bees abandon their hives, along with the queen, brood and food supplies.

The USDA cites "multiple factors... including parasites and disease, genetics, poor nutrition and pesticide exposure," while also citing last summer's drought as a contributing factor.

Many environmental groups seem convinced that pesticides are a main factor in the continuing colony collapse situation. One group, Beyond Pesticides, has called the EPA's recent green light for use of a new insecticide known as sulfoxaflor irresponsible in light of its "highly toxic" classification for honey bees.

The American Civil Liberties Union is warning the US public against being bogged down in too much debt. The group has revealed figures showing a rising number of people who fail to pay their debts and fines end up behind bars without a court verdict. The practice is being criticized as unconstitutional, but it's alive and kicking in the State of Ohio, as RT's Marina Portnaya explains.
